Chalmers Formula Sailing Team: A Fresh Start for FSMC 2025

Embracing Change: A New Team, A New Structure

The Chalmers Formula Sailing Team is gearing up for the 2025 SuMoth Challenge with a completely new lineup. While Edwin, a key member from the 2024 team, has stepped up as captain, the rest of the team is composed entirely of new members. This fresh start brings not only new faces but also a refined organizational structure aimed at improving efficiency and workflow.

A major update for the 2025 challenge is the implementation of specialized subteams, each led by dedicated leaders:

  • Design Team – Responsible for drawings and calculations, covering all components from small details to major structural parts.
  • Manufacturing Team – Plans and executes manufacturing processes, including material estimation and ordering.
  • Control Systems Team – Focuses on the foils’ control system and electrical components, working closely with the design team.
  • Media Team – Manages social media, creates graphics, tracks deadlines, and oversees reports and deliverables.
  • Sailing Team – Responsible for sailing the boat during the competition and conducting crucial testing sessions.

This structured approach aims to enhance collaboration while ensuring clarity of responsibilities. However, team members are encouraged to work across subteams when needed, fostering flexibility without compromising organization. With a diverse team that includes professional sailors, engineers, and graphic designers, we are well-equipped to tackle the challenges ahead.

Returning to FSMC 2025: The Drive for Improvement

Following a strong performance in the 2024 SuMoth Challenge, our team is back with renewed motivation and determination. Our primary goal is to surpass last year’s results and advance sustainable sailing practices. Rather than starting from scratch, we are focusing on improving our existing boat, refining its design and performance through iterative enhancements.

Roadmap to FSMC 2025: Innovations and Sustainability

For the 2025 competition, we will once again participate in all three stages, but this year, our focus is on fine-tuning our current boat. Our journey began with a detailed evaluation of last year’s design, identifying key areas for improvement. From foils to control systems, gantry, and rig, we are systematically addressing components that need enhancement.

As of January, most tasks are on schedule, with only the mounting point for the main foil experiencing slight delays. With formal access to the workshop nearly secured, we are poised to begin building our upgraded components. Our next priority is refining the rig, with an exciting development in the works—though we’re keeping that under wraps for now!

A major aspect of our sustainability efforts lies not only in material selection but also in efficient, low-waste design. One critical decision was to manufacture a complete carbon foil, leveraging our expertise in this material to ensure reliability. Alongside this, we are exploring the development of an ECO foil, an ambitious project that we hope to bring to fruition before the competition. While its feasibility remains uncertain, our commitment to sustainable innovation continues to drive us forward.

Ready to Take on the Challenge

The road ahead is filled with uncertainties and challenges, but our 2025 team is energized and eager to push the limits. With a clear strategy, a dedicated team, and a commitment to sustainability, we are ready to make our mark on this year’s SuMoth Challenge. Stay tuned as we continue our journey towards innovation, performance, and a greener future in sailing!
