Sapienza Foiling Team is joining the SuMoth Challenge
The Sapienza Foiling Team is thrilled to announce our debut in the Foiling SuMoth Challenge (FSMC) 2025! We are a newly formed group of students from La Sapienza University of Rome, and we are ready to take on this exciting challenge with passion and determination.
Team Motivation: A Dream Becomes Reality
La Sapienza University has long been a leader in academic excellence, producing bright minds who excel across various scientific fields. However, sailing has yet to be a part of this impressive tradition—until now. The Sapienza Foiling Team was born from the vision of our captain, Federico Romeo, who dreamed of creating this team as early as 2022. Today, that dream is a reality, and over 25 dedicated students from diverse backgrounds—including engineering, mathematics, physics, and more—are coming together to make our mark on the sailing world.
Under the leadership of Federico Romeo (Team Captain) and Edoardo Codacci-Pisanelli (Co-Captain), we are ready to embrace this challenge, and our diverse expertise is our greatest strength. The dynamic, innovative, and curious nature of sailors at La Sapienza has driven us to push the boundaries of what we can achieve.
Why We Are Registering for FSMC 2025
La Sapienza’s rich history dates back to its founding in 1303, and we are proud to contribute to that legacy by launching the Sapienza Foiling Team. Our decision to enter the Foiling SuMoth Challenge is motivated by a deep passion for the sport and an eagerness to see how far we can push the limits of innovation and sustainability in high-performance sailing.
Sailing has been growing in popularity in Rome, from the bustling waters of Ostia to Lake Bracciano, where foiling boats are becoming an exciting trend. Inspired by Italy’s strong presence in the Foiling SuMoth Challenge, we felt it was time to represent our university and showcase Rome’s connection to the sea through this challenging and rewarding competition.
The Moth class, known for being the fastest single-handed dinghy in the world, represents the ultimate test of skill, design, and innovation. Our central question is: Can we design and build a boat that meets the high-performance standards of the Moth class while incorporating sustainable materials and fresh ideas? Only time will tell, but we are ready to give our all to find out.
Our Plans for FSMC 2025
As a debut team, we are starting from scratch, which comes with its own set of challenges and opportunities. Our first year will be focused on learning, growing, and working together to bring our vision to life. We are embracing a process of trial and error, continually refining our approach and improving step by step.
Our immediate goal is to move beyond Stage 1 (S1) and compete in both Stage 2 (S2) and Stage 3 (S3) with our very first project. While creating a fully self-made boat in our first year may be ambitious, we have set clear plans to ensure that we stay on track. We will focus on building the hull and wings in-house, while sourcing second-hand components for the sails and foils. This strategy allows us to concentrate on developing our core expertise while ensuring that our boat is race-ready for FSMC 2025.
Looking ahead, our ultimate goal is to design and build a 100% Sapienza Foiling Team-branded Moth. While this first step may be modest, we are confident that the lessons we learn along the way will propel us toward that vision in the future.
Currently, we are working tirelessly on our S1 boat, drawing inspiration from various high-performance foiling boats to inform our design. Every team member is putting in their best effort, and we are excited to see the fruits of our labor come to life. This experience is not just about competing; it’s about learning, growing, and building a foundation for future projects.
Looking Forward to FSMC 2025
The Sapienza Foiling Team is ready to take on the challenges of FSMC 2025. This is only the beginning of our journey, and we can’t wait to unveil the results of our hard work. We are committed to competing at a high level and pushing the boundaries of innovation and sustainability in foiling. Stay tuned for updates, and we look forward to seeing you at FSMC 2025!
