PoliMi Sailing Team: Aiming for New Heights at SuMoth Challenge 2025

A Stronger, More Determined Team

The PoliMi Sailing Team returns to the SuMoth Challenge with renewed ambition and an expanded crew. After last year’s victory, our team has grown to over 90 active members, supported by a dozen alumni who continue to share their expertise.

To ensure maximum efficiency, the team is structured into five specialized departments:

  • Marketing: Sharing our story and shaping the team’s brand image.
  • Mechatronics: Advancing technology and electronic systems.
  • Performance: Optimizing engineering solutions for maximum speed and efficiency.
  • Shore Team: Enhancing on-water capabilities and operations.
  • Structures: Developing and manufacturing high-performance components.

Each department plays a vital role in design, manufacturing, assembly, and testing, transforming ideas into reality with precision and dedication.

Our Board of Directors features a mix of returning and new leaders, ready to guide us through the season. The Team Director, continuing in their role from last year, also acts as Captain in competition. We’ve welcomed new leadership in key positions, including a Technical Director (Co-Captain), Operations Director (Logistics Officer), and Head of Marketing (Comms Officer). Additionally, the department heads lead their respective teams in ensuring our success.

Why Compete in the SuMoth Challenge 2025?

Winning the 2024 SuMoth Challenge was a milestone, but we see it as just the beginning. We’re back to push our limits, innovate further, and contribute to sustainable engineering in competitive sailing. The 2024 Edition was an unforgettable experience, motivating us to aim even higher in 2025.

The challenge aligns with our values, combining cutting-edge design, technical precision, and environmental responsibility. We are committed to exploring modular components, lightweight materials, and efficient energy use to set new standards in both performance and sustainability.

Our Roadmap to SuMoth Challenge 2025

We are fully committed to competing through S3 and are focusing on:

  • New Foils: Enhancing lift-to-drag ratios with new materials and processes for greater speed and sustainability.
  • Electronic Flight Control System: Replacing mechanical components with advanced electronic flight attitude control for improved responsiveness.
  • New Hull Design: Optimizing internal structures and hydrodynamics for peak performance.
  • Sustainability Enhancements: Implementing eco-friendly materials and reducing waste in manufacturing.
  • New Sail Design: Introducing a fully recyclable membrane with an optimized profile for improved usability.
  • Expanding Our Partner Network: Strengthening collaborations to support and enhance our project.

Overcoming Challenges in S2 and S3

To compete at the highest level, we must tackle significant engineering and logistical challenges. Our key focus areas include:

  • Refining electronic control systems for seamless foil integration.
  • Optimizing production techniques to reduce waste while maintaining structural integrity.
  • Enhancing collaboration across departments to meet deadlines and deliver a top-tier prototype.

Our Success at SuMoth Challenge 2024

In 2024, we achieved outstanding results:

  • 1st place in Fleet Race
  • 2nd place in Design and Engineering
  • 2nd place in Manufacturing and Performance

Our prototype, Febe, stood out for its reliability and innovation. Despite challenging weather conditions, we won three out of seven races. The success stemmed from a strong design philosophy emphasizing durability and adaptability.

Additionally, we reinforced our commitment to sustainability by developing key components—such as terraces in the shape of solid wings—without carbon fiber or molds. This minimized environmental impact while proving that sustainable designs can compete at the highest level.

Looking Ahead

With an expanded team, cutting-edge innovations, and an unwavering commitment to sustainability, the PoliMi Sailing Team is prepared to take on the challenges of SuMoth Challenge 2025. We’re eager to push the boundaries of what’s possible and continue making an impact in sustainable competitive sailing.

Stay tuned as we embark on this exciting journey!
