HKA KM-Packaging Sailing Team: Pioneering Sustainable Innovation in the SuMoth Challenge
The HKA Ecosail Engineering Team from Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences is setting sail on an exciting journey of innovation, sustainability, and high-performance sailing. As we take on the SuMoth Challenge, we are determined to push the boundaries of sustainable boat design while embracing the spirit of competition.
A Growing Team with a Big Mission
What started as a small group of 10 passionate students has now grown into a dynamic team of 25 highly motivated members. Each of us is eager to apply our engineering expertise to real-world challenges, transforming theoretical knowledge into cutting-edge sustainable sailing solutions.
The SuMoth Challenge is more than just a competition; it’s an opportunity to redefine the future of sailing through sustainable innovation. From the initial sketches to the final manufacturing process, our team is dedicated to developing a foiling Moth that embodies performance, efficiency, and eco-conscious design.
Overcoming Challenges & Learning by Doing
Most of our team members are new to sailing, making this project an exciting learning curve. To streamline development, we have structured our efforts like a sports team, dividing responsibilities into five key areas:
- Hull
- Wings
- Rudder & Rudder Foil
- Mast Connection
- Foil Steering Mechanics
Each sub-team focuses on independent research and development, ensuring that every component meets our sustainability and performance goals. The process includes:
- Concept Development: Sketching and refining initial ideas.
- Material Selection: Identifying eco-friendly, cost-effective materials.
- Manufacturing & Testing: Producing and fine-tuning components for optimal performance.
Beyond technical roles, team management, budget planning, and sponsorship outreach play a crucial part in our success. Under the leadership of Captain Cornelius Reinelt and Co-Captain Nikolas Spannut, we are confident in our ability to navigate the challenges ahead.
Why the SuMoth Challenge?
With years of experience designing and building 49er-style skiffs for the 1001Vela Cup, we saw the SuMoth Challenge as the perfect next step to expand our expertise. The foiling Moth’s high-speed, cutting-edge design presents a thrilling challenge that aligns with our vision: sustainable sailing through innovation.
This competition allows us to:

Looking Ahead: FSMC 2025
Originally, we planned to compete in FSMC 2024, but given our growing team and resource limitations, we made the strategic decision to focus on FSMC 2025. This gives us time to refine our designs, develop new skills, and build a truly competitive foiling Moth.
Designing a boat that not only sails but flies is an ambitious goal that requires precision, teamwork, and innovation. Thanks to the sailing team from Trieste, whose insights and generosity have greatly influenced our approach, we are more prepared than ever.
