Polito Sailing Team: Setting Sail for FSMC 2025
With the new academic year, the Polito Sailing Team has welcomed many new members, strengthening both our technical division and internal organization. More experienced members have taken on leadership roles with greater responsibility, ensuring the transmission of commitment and determination needed to tackle the challenges ahead. This restructuring aims to optimize efficiency and maintain continuity in the team’s knowledge and expertise.
Returning, as usual to the Challenge!
During the previous edition, despite the hard work carried out both in Garda and Turin to produce the final components needed to complete Victoria, we were unfortunately unable to participate in the various trials due to unforeseen issues.
Specifically, we encountered a production problem with the vertical rudder appendage, and the first time we put the boat in the water, the control system broke down after a short time. As a result, we were forced to return to shore and attempt repairs with the tools available at that moment. Since the boat had never been tested before, we needed to conduct trials to make various adjustments, but on the occasions we went out on the water, the wind was insufficient. Only on the last day of the competition were the conditions optimal, but shortly after, one of the two wings’ supports collapsed.
This year, our goal is to fully harness Victoria’s potential. As a team, we have decided not to build a new Moth because we believe in the project and consider it essential to develop a deep understanding of the boat. This will allow us to gather valuable engineering insights for future prototypes while keeping sustainability as a core principle.
Our Plans for FSMC 2025
Our main objective is to improve Victoria’s performance by implementing key design updates. We have identified critical improvements, particularly in the wings and appendages. A new wing design will feature enhanced materials, focusing on sustainability and waste reduction. Additionally, we are redesigning the foils, addressing past issues related to stability and flexibility. The new foils will improve maneuverability and responsiveness. Alongside structural advancements, we are exploring innovative manufacturing techniques to enhance the quality and durability of our components.
Sula will also make its fourth appearance at the SuMoth, demonstrating our commitment to long-lasting, sustainable design. While we will perform the necessary maintenance, no major modifications will be made, emphasizing the durability of our past prototypes.
Beyond the Competition: Events & Networking
This year, as in previous editions, our team is actively participating in various fairs and events both in Italy and internationally. We have already attended Metstrade in Amsterdam, the Salone Nautico in Venice, and the Maker Faire in Rome. Soon, some of our members will also be present at JEC in Paris and the A&T fair in Turin alongside other teams from Politecnico. These events offer invaluable opportunities to connect with industry professionals, showcase our work and expertise, and potentially secure new partnerships and collaborations.
As we prepare for the SuMoth challenge once again, our enthusiasm continues to grow. After many years, our ambition keeps getting higher, reflected in the innovative projects we pursue. Beyond the technical and competitive aspects, what makes this experience truly special is the sense of unity within our team. We are a group of students brought together by a shared passion, and this journey not only equips us with essential skills for the future but also fosters strong and lasting friendships. These connections, formed both within and beyond the team, enrich our experience in ways that go far beyond engineering and design.
