Marlin Team: Pushing Forward Towards the Foiling SuMoth Challenge 2025
As we continue working towards the Foiling SuMoth Challenge 2025, the Marlin Team has made significant strides, overcoming obstacles and refining our designs. While challenges are part of any ambitious project, our journey so far has been a testament to perseverance and the power of collaboration.
We began with the tough lessons of last fall’s testing, during which our rudder and centerboard broke. But instead of setbacks, these failures have turned into opportunities for growth. We’ve redesigned both parts, maintaining the same shape but improving their durability by optimizing the carbon fiber alignment and increasing the number of layers. Our new fabrication method aims to expedite production while ensuring that these critical components function seamlessly, giving us the best chance to perform at our highest level during the competition.
As time is of the essence, we are also working diligently to finalize our plans for Malcesine, where we will showcase our work. Given that we are located across the ocean, careful planning and logistics are crucial to ensure everything runs smoothly when we present our efforts on-site during the competition.
A Design with Purpose: Sustainability at the Core
One of the proudest aspects of the Marlin Team’s project is our focus on sustainability. Our hull design embodies this commitment. We’ve prioritized several key criteria, such as buoyancy, stability, speed, and environmental responsibility. The result is a hull that’s both light and efficient, made entirely from natural fibers.
But we didn’t stop there. We used a thermoplastic resin and a core made from recycled PET, which not only contributes to the boat’s performance but also reduces our environmental impact. The ethos of sustainability runs through every aspect of our project, including our dedication to the 3R principle. We’ve reused second-hand materials, including an old hockey stick and even a wingsurf sail, demonstrating that sustainable innovation can be both practical and creative.
Milestones and Achievements
Looking back, it’s been an incredible journey filled with hard work and determination. After countless hours of research on composite materials, learning about boat design, seeking sponsorships, and navigating a steep learning curve, we finally saw our boat come to life. The first time the boat hit the water, all the hours spent on the project culminated in a proud moment for the team. It wasn’t without its challenges—there were a few breaks along the way—but seeing our creation sail for the first time was a monumental milestone.
In addition to our technical achievements, we also had the opportunity to present the boat at the MegaGeniale Exhibition, one of Canada’s largest student engineering fairs. Over the weekend, we shared the story of our project with a wide range of attendees, from young children to seasoned professionals, explaining the unique features of our boat and the sustainability efforts behind it. This public engagement allowed us to not only showcase our work but also inspire others with our approach to innovation and sustainability.
Preparing for the Final Countdown
With the competition looming, the Marlin Team is focused on finalizing every aspect of our project. We’re fine-tuning our presentations for both the S1 and S2 stages, ensuring that we deliver a clear and compelling narrative of our progress. However, we’re also facing logistical challenges, particularly around the transportation of the boat to Italy. The boat needs to be shipped one to two months before the competition, which leaves us with limited time to complete all remaining tasks.
The fabrication of key components, such as the rudder and centerboard, is still underway. While time is tight, our team is fully committed to making sure everything is ready for the competition. We know that, despite the hurdles, we’ll be fully prepared for the challenge ahead. Every day brings us closer to realizing our vision—and we can’t wait to see it all come together at FSMC 2025.
In conclusion, we’re proud of the progress we’ve made and excited for what lies ahead. The Marlin Team is not just building a boat; we’re building a legacy of sustainable innovation, collaboration, and determination. Stay tuned for more updates as we prepare to compete in the Foiling SuMoth Challenge 2025!
