collaborate to drive real innovation

on and off the water.

Students

Students and passionate young innovators are at the heart of the SuMoth Challenge. They bring the creativity and drive needed to rethink traditional manufacturing processes and materials, pushing industry norms forward.

For every participating student, SuMoth offers the perfect complement to the classroom: a hands-on experience where you design, build, sail, and optimize your own foiling concept, from idea to water.

Are you a new team ready to take part in SuMoth? Send us a request through the contact form below, and we’ll guide you on how to get started. Let’s turn your ideas into a real foiling boat!

Take a look at the FAQ section below!

Teams must include university-level students (Bachelor, Master, or PhD). Multidisciplinary teams are encouraged, combining engineering, design, and sustainability knowledge.

From the 9th Edition (SuMoth Challenge 2027) all team will be required to present a “Team structure and prospect” document along with the registration request form

Yes, all information regarding dates, deadlines and time-sensible information is found on the Edition section.

Under special circumstances, this can be done but it’s encouraged to keep the leadership team all along the process.

With the tight schedule of the Challenge and high-standard requirements, joining mid-edition is not possible.

To begin, a team must first sent a Registration Request Form along with the Team Prospect document. Once accepted for review, the organising team will provide an answer to setup an online interview with the leadership team.

While this could change for further editions, until 2026, no registration fees were required.

Past projects Reports, media and results are available on the “Editions” page, aiming to build legacy.

The number of students in a team has no boundaries, from 3 to comply with the minimal roles, to infinite for the Design and Manufacturing phases.

Academia & Institutions

The SuMoth Challenge offers the perfect platform for academic institutions to combine teaching, research, and applied innovation.

Bachelor’s and Master’s students can work on real-world, hands-on projects, designing, building, and testing foiling boats, while integrating the latest principles of sustainability, materials science, and naval architecture.

For doctoral and post-doctoral researchers, SuMoth provides a unique testbed for applied research, enabling experimentation with advanced manufacturing methods, performance optimization, and innovative materials — all within the context of a high-performance marine challenge.

By participating, institutions can enhance their curriculum, offer impactful thesis projects, and connect students with industry and international collaborators, bridging the gap between classroom theory and practical experience.

Frequently Ask Questions (FAQ)

Universities and academic institutions can participate by encouraging student teams to join the challenge, integrating SuMoth into coursework, or aligning research projects with the edition timeline. Collaboration begins by contacting the SuMoth team to discuss objectives and opportunities.

The SuMoth Challenge is organically compatible with:

  • Bachelor semester or capstone projects

  • Master’s theses (MSc.)

  • Applied research projects

  • Doctoral and post-doctoral research initiatives

The challenge provides a real-world framework for design, engineering, sustainability, and marine innovation.

Participation gives students hands-on experience beyond classroom theory while allowing faculty to supervise applied projects connected to industry-relevant challenges. Institutions benefit from visibility, collaboration opportunities, and alignment with sustainability-driven innovation.

The SuMoth team provides documentation, rulebooks, technical guidance, and mentorship channels. Faculty maintain academic supervision while SuMoth ensures alignment with competition requirements and deliverables.

Yes. Projects developed within the challenge can contribute to theses, reports, or publications, provided academic integrity and collaboration guidelines are followed.

No formal partnership is required for student participation. However, institutions interested in deeper collaboration, visibility, or long-term involvement can establish a partnership through the Allies/Partners pathway.

Ideally several months before the edition launch, so projects can be integrated into academic calendars and supervision structures. Early coordination ensures smoother alignment with milestones.
