Impetus Sailing Team: Engineering Maritime Circularity at FSMC 2025

Flight Control PCB for SuMoth Concept

Impetus Sailing Team is excited to share our latest up dates and plans for the Foiling SuMoth Challenge (FSMC) 2025. We are a student-driven initiative from the Technical University of Munich, and our mission is to combine cutting-edge sailing performance with sustainable practices. This year, we are more determined than ever to make our mark on the competition while pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in eco-friendly boatbuilding.

Team Update: A New Chapter in Our Journey

As we take on the FSMC 2025 challenge, we are proud to announce that our team has undergone a significant restructuring. After gaining valuable experience with our previous project at the 1001 Vela Cup, we have reorganized to work more efficiently as one cohesive engineering unit. This shift allows us to streamline communication and coordination across the boat’s development, ensuring that every detail is crafted to perfection.

Our focus remains steadfast on sustainability, particularly in the materials we use. In our boatbuilding process, we are committed to recyclable composites, exploring new material combinations that optimize the recyclability of our boats without compromising on performance. This approach sets us apart from other teams and reinforces our dedication to environmental responsibility.

Why We Are Registering for FSMC 2025

After completing the 1001 Vela Cup project, we were eager to take on a new challenge. FSMC 2025 presents the perfect opportunity for us to continue our journey toward sustainable sailing. The SuMoth Dollars credit system, which ensures a transparent sustainability standard, immediately drew us in. Unlike other competitions where teams may claim to use sustainable materials without a true commitment to sustainability, FSMC takes a holistic approach, aligning perfectly with our values.
Foiling technology is rapidly advancing, and as a team, we’ve been captivated by it since the beginning. After successfully developing our skiff, Schickeria, for the 1001 Vela Cup, we’re excited to bring our expertise into the more complex world of foiling moths. The FSMC 2025 provides the perfect platform to apply our knowledge while continuing to explore innovative solutions for high-performance, sustainable sailing.

Our Plans for FSMC 2025

With our motto “Engineering Maritime Circularity” in mind, we are determined to apply the lessons learned from Schickeria to our new foiling moth. In the development of Schickeria, we created a fully recyclable hull by carefully selecting and combining sustainable materials. This experience will serve as the foundation for our next steps.

Our goals for FSMC 2025 include:

  • Continuing to refine our approach to recyclability in lightweight boatbuilding and perfecting our existing concepts.
  • Leveraging the upcycled foils loan program, which allows us to focus on designing an innovative hull while maintaining our sustainability goals.
  • Developing an advanced electronic flight control system to enhance both stability and performance.
  • Entering the production phase by the end of January 2025, with the goal of completing the month by May.
  • Allocating time for optimization and training, ensuring that our boat is competition-ready for the final race in Stage 3.

By pursuing these objectives, we aim to push the limits of sustainable foiling and contribute to the future of eco-friendly high-performance sailing. Our commitment to sustainability remains at the core of everything we do.
