KTH Joins the SuMoth Challenge

Founded in December 2025 at KTH (Royal Institute of Technology) , Ägir Sailing Team is a newly established student team driven by ambition, structure, and technical expertise.

Team background

With over 20 members across four departments, the team is working intensively toward building and testing a prototype in time for the 2026 SuMoth Challenge—aiming to reach Lake Garda with a competitive boat while laying strong foundations for future seasons.

Ägir Sailing Team is a newly formed student initiative at KTH, launched at the beginning of December. Despite being in its early stages, the team has already established a clear organizational structure and begun developing its design for the competition.

The organization consists of a board and four departments: Communication; Marketing & Management; Design & Manufacturing; and Quality Assurance. The board is made up of Baptiste, Linn, Linnea, Matteo, Oscar, Sebastian, and Viktor. Linnea serves as Captain and Matteo as Co-Captain, while the remaining members manage the respective departments. Most board members are pursuing master’s degrees in Aerospace or Naval Architecture, while Viktor, a bachelor’s student in Vehicle Engineering, leads communication efforts.

Beyond the board, more than 20 additional members contribute across subgroups within the four departments. Weekly meetings are held every Monday to review progress and align on upcoming goals, ensuring transparency, coordination, and a shared direction across the team.

Why are we registering at the 2026 SMC

The foundation of the team is closely tied to the Naval Design project course at KTH, offered to master’s students in Naval Architecture and Aerospace Engineering. The SuMoth Challenge aligns strongly with the course objectives, making participation a natural decision once the opportunity was identified by the course examiner, Ulysse.

To strengthen the project, participation was opened to students beyond the course. This brought in additional contributors, including bachelor’s students—some completing their thesis within the project, others contributing voluntarily in their spare time.

A significant portion of the team’s effort is embedded within academic commitments. Students enrolled in the Naval Design course dedicate at least 12 hours per week to the project, while bachelor’s thesis students contribute a minimum of 16 hours weekly. Many team members invest additional time beyond these formal requirements. Although the team began relatively late, this structured academic integration provides a strong foundation to deliver meaningful progress and ultimately field a boat in Garda.

Planning towards the Challenge

The team’s primary objective is clear: to compete at Lake Garda (S3) with a fully operational boat. To achieve this, an internal milestone has been set to have the first prototype in the water by late April. This timeline is designed to allow sufficient testing and troubleshooting before the competition.

Progress is currently on track. The team has already secured a mast and boom, initiated material testing, and engaged in discussions with potential sponsors for materials and financial support. However, the team remains realistic about the challenges ahead and acknowledges that setbacks may occur.

If unforeseen issues prevent full readiness for 2026, the team is committed to continuing development toward the 2027 season. Measures are already in place to ensure continuity, including involvement from members who will remain active next year to preserve knowledge and industry contacts.

Regardless of the outcome, Ägir Sailing Team intends to be present at Garda—to compete if ready, or otherwise to observe, learn, and build connections for the future.
